The Bernese mountain dog is a working breed and one of the most popular activities which many owners take part in with their dog is carting.
Carting is a sport which demands a lot from the dog physically and only a big, muscular dog like the Bernese can handle it. By giving the dog something to do, you are keeping them happy and active and that can really help you to have a well behaved, calm dog.

Why should you Consider Cart Pulling With Your Bernese?

The Bernese mountain dog can be nightmare to train. It does not fully mature until it is two years old and they can be a little excitable too. In order to get rid of this energy it is a good idea to give them something to do and carting is definitely one of the best activities you can take part in that will really work the dog.
Generally the dog has to pull along a cart filled with supplies. Mainly it is farm equipment and often teddies in the fun competitions. There are various weight restrictions that you will need to follow and in some areas there may also be certain age restrictions on the dog too. So it is worth finding out these restrictions before you apply to your local Bernese mountain dog carting club.
When it comes to the carting itself, usually you will have to follow a course which has various obstacles for the dog to go around. Wearing a harness and pulling the cart along with various supplies in it, the dog will have to avoid various distractions and successfully complete the obstacles. A judge will mark how well the dog does and how hesitant the dog is when it reaches each distraction.
You can take part in carting either at competition level or for just a bit of fun. It is advisable to start with the dog as young as possible if your local club allows it. This is because they do take so long to mature and so early training is definitely needed. Usually the Bernese will take to carting like an ice skater will take to a frozen pond. So it should not be difficult to teach your dog to pull along the cart and compete in carting competitions.
You just need to remember not to put too much weight onto the cart. There is only so much your dog can pull along safely and you will need to keep this in mind before you take part. Always follow the regulations set by the local kennel clubs and that way you cannot go wrong.
Overall carting is a fantastic activity to take part in with your Bernese mountain dog and it certainly gives them something to focus on. This is especially an advantage with younger dogs as it gives them a distraction and helps to calm them down when they are in the home.
