Giant Schnauzers will make great family dogs, but they need proper socialization and training first. They will instinctively protect their family from any harm they sense may be directed at them.

Although they will make a great family dog, they should not be in the same home as very small children. They have a tendency to be very hyperactive in their youth and may inadvertently hurt a small child. The Giant Schnauzer may bite small children. Great caution should be taken with these animals when there are small children around. They will need to be taught that certain behaviors are not appropriate around a small child. There is a steep learning curve here, so proceed at your own risk.

The Giant Schnauzer will be a loyal member of the family. He will want to be a part of anything and everything that you may do! He needs to be involved with you at all times. Even if you are just watching television, he will need to be included at your side. He feels that he is an integral part of your pack and should be treated with the respect he deserves. This may involve constant supervision and attention. He can be a handful, but he will be a devoted one! Whether this is worth the effort and time will be up to you and your family.

The Giant Schnauzer loves to play with his family. There are many games that you can play together! Any game that will involve chasing and running will be deemed as fun and he may never want the game to end. He has more than enough energy for all of you and will not tire easily. He will seemingly play for hours and hours and not even seem as if he is tiring. Such moments can be fun and invigorating. These moments can be used for true bonding between you and your dog. He will need to play hard and often!

The Giant Schnauzer will need many opportunities to experience socialization. This will be important to your family. He will be leery of strangers and will want to protect you from everyone. He will assume the role of protector and may attack if he feels you are being threatened. It is important to provide him ample opportunities to learn to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. You do not want your precious family pet attacking your friends and extended family. This could cause for some precarious situations for you in your other relationships. These situations can be avoided with lots of training and social opportunities.

The Giant Schnauzer will make a great companion to a family that will give him lots of love and affection. If you are a family who can be active and will dote on your dog, then this is the dog for you! If you do not want to be bothered with training, lots and lots of exercise opportunities and devotion to your dog then do yourself and the Giant Schnauzer a favor and look for another breed of dog.
