Feeding

Apart from grooming, feeding is also a crucial part in raising a Chow Chow. It is important that you know your Chow dog's diet for it significantly affects your pet's health. Also, provide him with a convenient feeding schedule.

Most dog breeds love meat, but Chow Chows have a sensitive skin. Consuming a lot of meat may cause skin problems which will damage their coat. For sure, your Chow Chow needs enough protein to keep his energy flowing. You may serve him rice, eggs, and cottage cheese. It is okay, however, to give him a small piece of meat once in a while. Rice is highly recommended for it is easily digested. Dog foods usually contain preservatives and may gradually deteriorate your Chow Chow's body systems. From time to time, though, you may include chicken or stewed vegetables into your Chow's diet.

You must also determine your Chow Chow's appetite. Always remember that your Chow Chow cannot overeat or his stomach will bloat, affecting his breathing, which may be fatal. He may only be fed four cups a day. You may treat him with a tidbit snack in between but be careful about what you put into his mouth. Is your Chow Chow going to digest it properly? Will he choke on it? Does it have good nutrition? Does it have preservatives? You must consider these imperative questions before feeding your dog anything.

After feeding your Chow Chow, give him clean water to drink for a refreshing treat, and always make sure there is fresh water available.

Exercise

As their owner, you'll soon notice that Chow Chows tend to be lazy. After meals, you may notice that your Chow Chow curls down in his comfort zone and dozes off. Generally, Chow Chows are lazy and they enjoy staying indoors. It is hard to believe, however, that history does not describe the Chow Chows' activity in our modern world. In the ancient times, Chow Chows were used as hunters. Now this breed belongs to the non-sporting dogs for some reason.

To keep your Chow pet healthy, short daily walks must be enforced. Create some bonding moments with him. You and your Chow Chow may turn your backyard into a playground or you may take him to a park and allow him to get to know his environment better. Let your Chow dog explore. However, keep an eye on him or he may encounter something that will provoke his temper. If possible, let your Chow Chow socialize with other pets. Simply guide him to make him feel comfortable. Socializing is also an activity that not only will benefit your chow pet's physical state, it will improve his mental and emotional spirits as well.

A healthy Chow dog rewards his owner with tender loving care. It's natural that your Chow Chow reacts to how you treat him or her. Always practice love.
