There is nothing worse than purchasing a new family pet, just to learn that someone in your home is allergic to the animal and you must take it back to the breeder. This is much less likely to happen with a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier because they have hair, rather than the fur coats of most dogs.

An adult Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier has a soft, usually wheat colored coat of hair that flows along its sturdy body and over its head partially covering its eyes. Wheatens usually have what appears to be a beard as well giving it an overall distinguished look.

Aside from being non-allergenic, this good-natured breed does not shed either, so very little hair should be found on rugs, couches, beds or other furniture. This is a huge plus that most other canines cannot compete with. However, Wheatens do have natural oils in their coat, as well as dander and saliva that could cause a reaction in some adults and children that are more susceptible to allergies.

Since Wheaten Terriers do have hair, they are less likely to attract fleas, unlike their furry counterparts, but owners must check their hair every now and then to ensure that there are no signs of skin rashes due to their own allergies and/or bites from insects they might have come in contact with. They might also contract ear mites, if the hair in their ears is not trimmed properly.

A Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier is such a fun loving and playful animals that it would be a real heartbreaker to learn that you have to part with it after you've brought the pet home and come to love it. The best way to ensure that a Wheaten Terrier will fit in well with your family and their needs is to have those who will be exposed to the animal spend a little time with it at the breeders before you actually make the purchase.

When you do bring this non-allergenic pet home, adults and children should be able to play with this dog, without fear of getting itchy, runny eyes or having difficulty breathing. However, despite this advantage, anyone with allergies should not be put in charge of bathing the dog or brushing its coat, just in case.

Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers are a true joy to have around because of their happy, playful disposition. Knowing that all family members will be able to enjoy this dog equally really is a wonderful thing. Your Wheaten Terrier will definitely love them back ten-fold. And knowing that no one's health will be adversely affected due to allergies makes having a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier even better.
