Most often when people first get their Australian shepherd they are not sure as to what to do with them or how to train them. However, there are many different ways of training your dog; you have to find what is best for you and your Australian shepherd.

One of the biggest struggles that owners have with their dogs is training them. However, Australian shepherds are a very smart dog, therefore making the training simple on the owner.

When you first get your Australian shepherd, one of the first things that you should train your dog on is housebreaking. For most people housebreaking is the most important thing for the dog to learn. Luckily for the owners Australian shepherds are very easy to housebreak. When training your Australian shepherd, the most important thing to remember is to stay consistent with the dog. Also, if it is a puppy you are training, he/she should always be in the same room or part of the house you're in, so that they may tell you that they need to be relieved. However, if you must leave your dog alone then it would be wise to put him outside or in a place that he/she will not want to relieve themselves. One of the biggest ways to see that your dog has to go potty is that they will be sniffing and pacing about the room.

Another way that people train their dogs is by using a crate. For many people using a crate seems to be mean; however, if used correctly the dog will think of it as a safe den where he can be alone or even to rest. Also, it is a great place to put your dog if you don't want him in the way or if you plan to travel with him. When crate training, you should first find a crate that will be big enough for him as an adult. You should also feed the puppy in the crate and encourage him to sleep in there, as well. The crate should never be used as a punishment; it should be thought of as a safe place for the dog.

If you are planning on training your Aussie as a herding dog, before you start trying to teach it to herd you will want to teach him discipline and obedience. Because the Australian shepherds are very easy training dogs, it will not take much time. In fact, they were bred to become very good listeners and to do what they are told. When training them it is important for the trainer to be firm and to let them know who is in charge.
