The Clumber Spaniel is a very interesting dog in that it provides a range of qualities that many families are seeking including friendliness and obedience. Yet, these qualities often have to be taught to the animal from the start. Understand this breed and you will have an easy time of training him to obey you. Most importantly, realize that the best method to get them to obey is through respect and reward training, rather than punishment or abandonment. Clumber Spaniel pups are more than willing to learn from you, if you have a steady hand and the time to devote to the process.

What To Teach

There are several things that you need to teach your Clumber Spaniel to see a respectful dog. It starts by teaching them to respect you. To accomplish this, work through the dog training methods that work for pack animals. In that, you need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack, rather than allow your Clumber Spaniel to lead you. Establishing yourself as the "leader of the pack" allows them to find their fit within your society or home. This means that they will obey what you tell them to, based on what you show as appropriate behavior. Keep in mind that the dog is your specific dependent and the Clumber Spaniel needs to follow your direction. They want to obey and listen to you.

Housebreaking your Clumber Spaniel may prove to be somewhat of a challenge. These dogs are often more than willing to learn from you, but they will need you to continuously reinforce the methods over and over again. The Clumber Spaniel is a relatively low key dog. This means that he is not overly interested in what you want him to do, either. Yet they are intelligent and will listen to you through repeated work on housebreaking.

There are many things that you can teach a Clumber Spaniel. Start with teaching a puppy to respect you through respect based training. Next, teach housebreaking. You also can teach him basic manners as to how to behave with other people, other dogs, and in your home. In terms of socialization, do it! If not exposed to other dogs or other people, he will become shy and this could mean problems later. Instead, work toward providing the dog with socialization from a young age. He'll enjoy it!

Your Clumber Spaniel is also likely to enjoy learning activities that you like to do. For example, he is a good dog for walks and he will work well on hikes and camping if you train him. Also, these dogs may not look like it, but they are fairly good learners of agility training. The key to teaching your Clumber Spaniel anything is to do so positively through reward and respect training. Do not punish your pet harshly as they will become more withdrawn and listen less. Be the leader of the pack and these dogs are sure to follow your guidance.
