The Beauceron is generally quite good with children. It needs to be introduced to them from an early age and in essence raised with the child. He does not take kindly to strangers that trespass or threaten his surroundings or family. He will be aggressive in those instances. He is discerning and confident in his ability to protect those whom he loves. However, he needs lots of socialization. He must be provided lots of opportunities to meet good people so he can quickly determine what is to be considered abnormal behavior. If not given the opportunity for socialization, they may become suspicious of everyone and this could lead to biting. They will become fearful of strangers instead of protecting you against them.
The Beauceron is intelligent and a calm dog. He calculates things with a precision that is amazing. He is loyal and friendly within his family. He is gentle and obedient. He loves to please his family and his master. He is a patient dog and demands respect. He is a controlling dog who must be taught that he is not the master of the family. He will need a strict and firm handler who knows how to lead him with consistency. When this has been displayed to him, he will follow your lead, and will no longer seek to be the boss of the family.
The Beauceron needs lots and lots of exercise. He will love to play catch with your children. He loves the interaction as he is quite social with those whom he loves and is devoted to. He needs to be taken on long walks every day. He needs to be able to run and romp and stretch his legs without the hindrance of a leash. He loves to be a part of family outings and especially loves them if they provide him the opportunity to play and run in large open spaces.
The Beauceron is a large dog in both stature and spirit. Some people consider him to be "too much dog". He is not for the average family. He requires a lot of energy and drive from his owner. If you are not dedicated to providing him the opportunities he needs, this may not be the dog for your family.
