The Scottish Terrier's sense of loyalty has been famous for more than a century. In the mid 1800s, a Scottie named Bobby began garnering a lot of public attention in the town of Edinburgh. Bobby had belonged to a policeman by the name of John Gray, who was well known throughout Edinburgh due to his frequent nightly patrols on which Bobby invariably accompanied him. John eventually contracted tuberculosis and died, at which point Bobby began to visit his master's grave every night regardless of often harsh weather. This unbroken streak was to continue to fourteen years until Bobby himself died in 1872. A statue was resurrected in tribute to the faithful dog and can still be seen today. [...]

When the Titanic sailed on its maiden voyage, there were three breeds of dog that survived that fateful day on April 14th, 1912 when the White Star Liner clashed with an iceberg. Two of these breeds were the Pomeranian and the Pekinese. These small dogs were allowed on the life boats very early in the evening together with their owners while the life boats were still very empty, and no one seemed to object. The third dog was a Newfoundland, owned by the first officer of the Titanic. The dog was found swimming in the icy waters and it assisted a life boat to locate human survivors. [...]

One is that it is said to be a descendant of the English bulldog and was rumored to have been brought over by settlers to help with the guarding of crops and livestock. This theory also states that the American bulldog is actually the truer type of "English bulldog" than the present English bulldog.
