i have a 5 year old lab who just loves every thing to death animals people etc. We just got a cattle dog, and they were fine with each other, now after 3 days have passed my cattle dog which i just got was shipped to me by flight, has started biting my dog they can't even pass each other in the hall. My cattle dog will bite my lab, my lab of course does nothing, what can i do about this my cattle dog is 1 1/2 years of age and i don't want to get rid of either dog any ideas, open to try anything. Thank you. she gets alot of exercise, this is the only problem i have with her. and it is not like she is a nasty dog, she is really sweet, please help me help these two dogs.

This most likely is dominance related agression. Or possibly your cattle dog just may not like other dogs, since she didn't come into your life as a puppy. Either way, the cattle dog is trying to exert her dominance authority over your lab (which is actually a breed characteristic unfortunately), even though your lab probably doesn't even care to be the alpha dog in the family. Unfortunately there's not much you can do. You can get a water bottle and fill it with 1/4 vinegar, 3/4 water to break up the fights, but from everything I've been told by breeders and trainers, I doubt your cattle dog will ever stop trying to show the lab 'who is boss'. In fact, in many cases, the fighting can escalate to the point of being dangerous to one dog or the other, especially if your lab takes a notion to fight back and defend itself. Tell me this, when you leave and come back, do you pet the lab first? Or the cattle dog? If you pet the lab first, what does the cattle dog do? Does either dog get to sleep on the furniture? Do you have a crate for both dogs, or one dog? We have an Akita that's about a year old, and a mixed breed that's about 4. We knew that Akitas can be dominant agressive. When we first brought the Akita in the house, we made sure that she understood that we considered the mixed breed dominant to her, the Akita. Bowen eats first, sleeps on the furniture, gets petted first whenever we come home, etc. Ramoth has to wait her turn for everything, never gets to sleep on any furniture, especially the bed. When Bowen gets fed, Ramoth has to sit in her wire crate and wait her turn. It sounds crazy but there's a balance in our household. We've never had any problems, and believe me, Ramoth is NOT a submissive dog. You might have to do things like this to let the Cattle Dog know that you guys consider the lab dominant. Or you might have to do things the opposite way to assure the Cattle dog that it is the dominant one and your older dog is the lowest rung on the ladder, then it won't haev to keep exerting its dominance over the lab. I'm not sure it will work honestly, your cattle dog is mature, and our Akita was a puppy when we did all this. The cattle dog might still feel the need to beat the lab up just for kicks and grins. If it doesn't work out, you might just need to come to grips that the Cattle dog doesn't work out in your family, or you will have to keep the dogs seperate at all times to protect the lab.

I have a australian cattle dog too, she is only 12 weeks old, and i also have a poodle cross. Jessie (the ACD), bites bella (the poodle) on the ears and face. But she does this as a sign of affection and been happy. So i dont know if it the the same with your dog. I just thought that hearing from someone with a ACD and having the same thing happen might make you feel alittle better about it.

We had to sit My buddies dog(also male acd) down with mine and hand feed them in turns. It was controlled so that both dogs knew there turn and they were kept in check by the true alpha males us being the owners. That stopped them from fighting over food and toys if one had somthing the other left him alone. I hope all workout P.S. I am by no means a pro just a thought or two

you need to talk to a proffesional trainer about that one.

We just got an ACD/Rottweiler mix puppy and we have a 6 year old German Shepherd. The first week with the puppy, we made the mistake of bringing the puppy into the house as the "top dog", we had her kennel upstairs, and we gave her all sorts of attention. Well, our German Shepherd thought we were replacing him with the puppy, and began to leave the room we were in, and not socializing with us. We decided to correct this problem right away, and so this week we are leaving the puppy in her kennel in the basement, we feed her in the basement, (only after our Shepherd has eaten), we let her out potty at regular intervals but put her back in her kennel even if she crys. My husband will take our Shepherd out for rides for an hour at a time so then I can bring the puppy up and play with her and give her love. We also walk them daily, the puppy love it and since they are on neutral territory, our Shepherd doesn't mind that she tags along. We are never abusive with her, but until this problem is corrected, we need to show that our Shepherd is top dog, and the puppy is at the bottom. Our puppy doesn't know anything else, she is only 10 weeks old and is such a trooper in her kennel. She plays with her squeak toys, and her Booda bones. When they are outside together, the Shepherd will gently bat her around and lightly mouth her to let her know he comes first. Since we've done this, our Shepherd has come around full circle, and we figure in about a week, he will start going downstairs and laying by her kennel, and show us that he finally accepts her into our "pack". We can then let her up with us in with the household graually till she is "one of us", but still the bottom dog. Then it's up to them to establish their rank at their own choosing. We feel that this is the way that the dogs naturally do things with their order in the wild, and so it will also be done that way within our household.

I think there is something that can be done. my old girl is a catahoula leopard dog. a breed notorious for being a thug. she is defintly the top dog in the pack. but this is how it goes. who is the alpha in the house. right now it is ACD. I have seen dogs get rehabed from this. I have not yet had problem with a aggression from my dog but roomates dog is defintly a scraper. the dog will not show aggresion my house. I have rehabed my wifes bestfriend's dog. dog was aggressive. you have to discpline the dog no matter what. even if the dogs decides to turn on you. the dog cannot win. there is much controversy on this move. the alpha dog rollover. place the dog on it's back. and place your hand firmly but gently on it's neck. if the dog struggele sharp prssure from your finger tips in to the dogs neck ususally shuts them right down. you have to assert your self. you say who is allowed in the pack. who say wgo is not not the dog. a leash and a choke collar might help. also walking the dogs together. use two people though and muzzle might not be a bad idea. try communal feeding under supervision. even feed the cattle dog with a choke collar and leas on.
