i don't think every store that doesn't have a sign should be assumed to let dogs in, it's more like dogs aren't allowed anywhere unless there is a sign that says they are. common sense here.
man i would not want to buy food at a place that let pets in. no way.

Scottie, here in the United States, there's the Americans With Disabilites Act, which is a national law that no disabled person can be discriminated against as a result of their disability. If any store or bar or public establishment in the US tried to bar a disabled person from entering their premises because they had a service animal the law would come down on them like a pack of dogs on a 3-legged cat. The courts interpret the law in a way that establishes the dogs as part of their functional life. If they would allow a customer in to the building or onto the premises, they MUST allow a person with a service dog in as well, even if the dog is bringing germs into the store.

There's a huge difference between the occaisonal disabled person who may come into the store with a service dog, and the HUNDREDS who would come in on a weekly basis if Walmart and other stores opened their doors to allow any and all pets. I suspect a great many cloths racks and food shelves would find themselves 'christened' by dogs marking their territory... Kind of like I see all the time when I go to petsmart :P

The difference is, service dogs are trained for upwards fo 18 months to 2 years before being placed with their handlers/owners. There's a much more extensive training process. The handler works with the dog, people aren't supposed to even touch these animals while they are working. Compare this to the average dog owner in the US who's dogs haven't even done basic obedience in many cases :P

Scottie, do you take your dogs into stores to shop for clothing? When you take your dog to eat with you, do you go into the restaurant and sit with the dog? Or are we talking outside patios? Do you take your dog into grocery stores wtih you? If so, your laws are just different from ours.

Truth be known, if walmart allowed dogs in it, even with the food thing, I'd take my dogs.. well one of them anyway.

where i live there are stores we can bring dogs in without people saying anything one is lowes and of course pet stores. I would not like people to bring in dogs to walmart, or any other place that sells food, I love my dogs but i dont have to take them every where with me and my family. Get over it if you cant go to walmart with your dog you need to grow up, it reminds me of Paris Hilton having a dog with her at all times.

Silly question I know, but why should the size of the dog make any difference? Unless you have a service dog, it should be held to the same rules as applies to every other dog, no matter how large or small. Just my opinion.

Lmao I have to put my two cents in. It's all about reading between the lines here, and useing comon sence. Just because there wasn't a sign, doesn't mean the store doesn't have policies. They asked you to leave because they have RULES against dogs in their store, so why make a big fuss, acept it and move on. Now you know that your dog is not welcome in the store. Just because you've seen other people get away with bringing their dogs into the store, doesn't make it right, just means they were sneakier lol. Just like the signs that say "no shirt, no shoes, no service"...does that mean I can go in without pants, as long as I have a shirt and shoes on? Nooooo lol.

I agree with you, size should not be the matter. If it says no dogs, that means ALL except for service dogs.

Isn't something how these people prefer certain dogs over the next.

If their policy says NO DOGS, then the little one in the bag if it's a dog should be consider like any other dog. But I guess some people are blind, meaning they allow smaller dogs to come in and don't the bigger one. After all are they dogs are NOT.

I have seen dogs (big dogs) in department stores comparable to Macy's in Germany. I never took my dog there, but it is possible. Grocery stores and other food stores have "no dogs allowed" signs, but if there is no sign, you can bring your dog.
Not all restaurants allow dogs, but many do. We took our dog to regular restaurants, inside, and he slept peacefully under the table while we ate. We never had a problem.
I understand about the Americans with Disability Act, my question was not:'why are service dogs allowed?', that is obvious, it was: "why is it so terrible if dogs are in a store or restaurant?"

One consideration law suits. Others might be that since this is a public palce you would be dealing with othes who might suffer from severe allergies or simple fright of all dogs.

Then again, if you let someone's Chi in, my Pyrs should be allowed and each and every OTHER dog owner's dog.

What you consider as well trained and I consider well trained might be worlds apart. Perhaps I might not see anything wrong with my males hiking their legs to mark this new territory. Just a little "oops"!

Seriously, there ARE people who just figure, what the heck, dogs will be dogs! What's a little pee?

Florida is considering (not sure where it is in the legislation) allowing some outdoor dinning with pets permitted. If it passes I would probably enjoy taking my crew for the outting (1 at a time). But this would be outside, not indoors so those who don't want to be near the pets won't be forced to sit near them.

When I first got Riley I brought him into a family owned grocery store. But I was allowed because I worked there lol. They were all excited to see him, although he was sound asleep in my arms. I remember them trying to wake him up and he was snoring. Ahhh I miss being able to hold him like that...

But yeah, in general, dogs no matter how small shouldnt be allowed into stores. Only service dogs.

I wasn't going to reply, it's pretty much all been said very well, but I just can't help myself.

Service dogs = Americans w/disabilities act (and common sense)

No dogs if it's not allowed = also common sense and the size of the dog should not make any difference. I have a 7lb. chi and an 80+ lb greyhound and golden. Would I think it would be ok to take my chi and sneak her in? Of course not. Have I seen people do it? Absolutely and it's a pet peeve of mine. If I follow the rules so should everyone else. It really doesn't matter why, fact is that is the rule for that place. End of story.

Last summer I was in Walmart in the produce section and there was a guy in there with a huge iguana on his shoulder. It grossed me out. Because I don't like them? Not necessarily, but it's gross to think a lizard (or anything else) is in the produce section. I found a manager and they made him leave. The manager said there had been other complaints about him in the food area of the store and they were looking for him when I pointed him out in the produce section.

If you truly don't understand why it's not ok, then any answer anyone here gives you isn't going to make a difference.

Rules are not for everyone else, they are for everyone and for a reason.

Its all been said,so I won't comment on the walmart situation. What I'm shocked about is that I was put out of a cab for having my puppy!! It was 3 am I fell asleep at my mom's and when I went to get in the cab he told me he's not taking me with the dog. Honestly I cursed him out badly. It was 3am, I'm a female, and the puppy weights 1.9lbs soaking wet!!!! I didn't think that was right but maybe its just me not following the rules.

Here it's against the law for animals to be in stores/restraunts where food is unless they're service animals.
Honestly, I find it offensive when people sneak their pets into stores with food. Some people dont bathe their pets regularly and , well, it's one thing for your food to be exposed to YOUR dog, but another when it's someone else's. They just dont belong in those stores. Sorry.

I love my dog to pieces and spoil him rotten and when I want to take him shopping we go to appropriate stores, the ones that allow pets! One part of being a responsible pet owner is knowing where it is ok to take your pet and where it is not and any store with food and or signs stating no pets is for sure not an ok place to take your pet and I don't care if the pet weighs 2lbs. or 200 lbs. The only exceptions I have are with the service dogs, they are the eyes and ears of a person who needs help getting along in the world and they are making it possible for that person to live as normally as possible, they are exceptional dogs, they are not just someones pet, they are someones life and should be respected. When you want to go shopping take a human friend(s) with you not your fur baby :) Dogs aren't interested in shopping and they probably won't give you a truthful answer when asked"do these make my butt look too big?" lol

Wow, I'm surprised you didn't get caught at the other stores. I'd never try to bring my dog into a store where no dogs are allowed. I imagine that if I brought my dog into a place where no dogs are allowed, and something happened, I would be held liable. And I'm not complaining that I would, either. They have those rules for a reason - to protect those who enter the store.

It makes me reconsider whether any dogs have been around my food when I go to the grocery store.
