It's truly amazing that this post is still goin strong...I've never heard of dogs being allowed in stores unless it's a service dog either. Now that doesn't mean that I'm saying that it doesn't happen, because it does, even here in Canada. I've seen people try to bring their little dogs into our Walmart.
Ozzygrl, I'm not being rude to you or anything because I'm sure it was an honest mistake, you were able to bring your dog to other places so you figured you could.
I just thought that I would put my 2 cents in though...

WOW! I don't think animals should be allowed in any store except pet stores. Like another post stated...Pet stores usually have supplies available for clean up. Even then people don't clean up after their animals.
Pets can have dander, fleas, ticks...all things not belonging around food, clothing, and carpet. I know I take precautions to protect my animals from all those things, while others may not. I do the same with my own children. We wash, purell etc to make sure we stay healthy.
Just my opinion, but a dog with 2 broken legs shouldn't be carried around constantly. You are going to risk more injury....JMO

There are apparently now grooming shops in some Walmarts. Can we say hypocrit!!!! I can't bring my dog in to shop, but I can bring him to be groomed. (Not that I ever would!)

I'm really in the minority here about how I feel about dogs in stores. First of all, let me say...I don't think anyone should take their dog in a store if it clearly states, no dogs. It really irritates me when people think that just because they have a toy breed, or just because they are carrying their dog, it's ok. If it's not ok to bring in your great dane, it's not ok to bring in your yorkie, either.

As far as allergies...I'm not buying it. It's perfectly legal to spray perfumes in stores, and lots of people are allergic to perfume. Same as smoking in bars-lots of people are allergic to smoke. You might say that you can avoid the perfume counters in stores, but hey-I've walked past plenty a person who had on WAY too much perfume/aftershave that I could barely stand it! How do you avoid that? Do you stay home? I realize it's not easy for people with allergies, but...

Anyway...in Europe, most countries are so much more open to allowing pets in restaurants, museums, stores, etc. Of course there's exceptions, but for the most part, it's not frowned upon. I wish the US would be more like that. I would have no problem at all sitting in a restaurant and have someone's dog laying at the table next to me. In fact, for me, it would enhance the experience.

And as someone else pointed out, I personally think that most dogs are much more sanitary than a lot of children I've seen. How can a snotty-nosed kid who obviously hasn't washed his hands in 3 days and picks up everything he sees in a store be preferable to seeing a dog? I'll take the dog every time.
