My puggle Lola is about 8 months and she won't stop biting. It's nonstop all day everyday. She wakes up biting. We've tried dog training classes, bitter apple, dog whisperer technique, yelling, etc... She just won't stop! Does anyone else have this problem with their puggles, and when will it end?

She does great at her basic commands, like sit, stay, down. Plus, she's super adorable when she's sleepy! But otherwise, she's an absolute terror. She's ripped a huge hole in our couch, and she's been pulling up our outdoor carpet out back.

We finally just got her potty trained about at 6 months, with occasional accidents here and there.

If anyone has any advice it would be of great help. We don't know if we can handle much more of our daily lives being ruined! It's immpossible to just relax with her in the room because you will be biten repeatedly!

i am not a trainer. i can only tell you what works for my dogs. never had a bite or bark problem until tiger lily came along. she is constantly biting on the other dogs or biting our hands when we pet her. its been a stay on her butt 24/7 situation. when we see her biting on the other dogs , we grab her neck ( not roughly) and sit her down and say NO BITE ! same thing when she does it too our hands or feet. she has gotten to where we know ahead of time when shes going to do it because she will go up to the other dogs, but look at us first. when she knows we are watching her, she will sit down right away. she knows whats coming if she tries biting. she still does it once in awhile, but she has gotten alot better with it. its just that we have to stay on top of it all the time so she knows we mean business. lol

Any dog can be nippy...

Where did you get your dog? it may be an underlying cause of your problems if I knew.

But a choke chain on her, first off, then use the "umbilical chord" system, let her wander with you, but have her leash attached to you at all times, either by your hand or belt loop... as soon as she starts getting nippy give a good loud "NO or NO BITE" and pop her with the choke chain.

This will also help with your mix'es lack of housebreaking, as you can always watch her.

If all else fails and none of the tried and true methods work there is another way. Immediately when she bites make a very loud, sharp "YIPE" sound like a pup that just got its tail stepped on. Most dogs have an instinctive "back off" reaction to the sound of a smaller dog being hurt. It saves pups from their bigger siblings playing too rough with them. Rather than simply teaching the dog that this is behavior you don't like and is against the rules, this method actually teaches the dog that it is hurting you and the dog itself desires to avoid that (unless the dog really doesn't like you which is rare) and will stop biting after a few incidents.

I want to add that it doesn't always work well with a fighting-bred breed of dog but it works with most dogs.

That is a good method for a "soft" dog, most Beagles are belligerent and this method won't work.

However try the "Yipe" method first, anything for the path of least resistance!

Have you tried squirting her with water? We usually reserve this for barking in the crate but it may be enough to divert her attention.

Ignoring her after she bites? This worked for us with our beagle (and she was a nippy little thing!).

Does she have enough chew toys? We offer a wide variety for the dogs to choose from. Seems to satisfy their chewing need and I have NEVER lost an article of clothing, shoes, furniture, carpet or anything due to dog damage.

Don't forget that being a puggle means being part beagle. Beagles are stubborn little creatures BUT they can be trained and are so darn sweet.

We've tried the water bottle spraying method, and that did nothing, she just got used to it! We've tried a horn, or loud noise but that only worked at the moment then she would come right back for more. She's absolutely impossible. She's so sweet and lovey when she's tired and she'll curl right up to us, so I know she loves us. You can tell she's just trying to play, but boy does it hurt!

Our Beagle Molly was a holy terror with the biting, OMG.
As old as she is (14 mos.) she still thinks its the funniest thing to run up and nip at my toes to try and get me to chase her, she is very bossy and hard headed as I have learned most beagles are:)
But when the puppy biting was really bad, we used the squirting with water, she got used to that, so we added just a little white vinegar to the water, just a little, maybe a teaspoon to 12-16 oz of water in a spray bottle, that got her attention for a while, then we tried the bitter apple spray, I think she liked it!!!
But the thing that finally did the trick, AND please don't anyone yell at me for this, because I got it from a 1970's or 80's dog training book, but we used tobasco sauce. We were desparate, she was drawing blood:(
I bought a bottle and every day I would put a little out in a dish for easy acsess, and every time she bit to hurt I would put just a tiny dab on her gums, just enuf for her to feel it. WEEELLLL>>>did that ever change things!!!!?
After a few days. all I had to do was show her the bottle and it stopped her in her tracks!!! Amazing. I know it might sound cruel but it did the trick.

Note: Molly also chewed up our carpets and other things in the house. We would put tobasco sauce anywhere she liked to chew, after she learned what it was the scent alone kept her away.

LOL! About Beagles being hard headed! Good golly if that isn't the truth. Oh and Maggie LOVED the tabasco sauce. She was such a brat. Bitter apple spray was a joke too.

MY beagle got used to the squirt gun too. I gave it up for a while but it works again.

Well one more thing to tell you. Because beagles (and yours sounds like it has the beagle personality) HATE not getting their way- try the ignoring. It drove Maggie NUTS when I ignored her and there were times she was such a beast I pretty much ignored her the whole day.

My dad kept telling me- relax, she will grow out of it. Thankfully she did and now I wouldn't trade her for the world (though that stubborn streak is still there). There were many times she had me in tears of frustration over her bratty behavior. I was surprised they let us stay in puppy school she was so bad. I cringed at the thought of another puppy but Hannah has been like a little angel.

Just keep working with your dog. The moment you give into a beagle your in trouble. Let her know YOU rule the house and keep reminding her. Do you have any good books on beagles? If you can learn about their personality you can figure out what helps motivate them to good behavior. Don't give up -just keep trying things til you find one that works.

Beagles are very smart. Try extra walks or extra play times to wear her out. Keep reinenforcing the no bite rule.

Trust me I know what you are going through. It's not fun. But it does end. Beagles are really great once you kinda get them figured out. Never doubt their intelligence though!

Beagle/Basset...Your post made me laugh:). Beagles are such sweet wonderful dogs but Boy!!!! does it take a long time to get there! When Molly was little she was like the cartoon Tasmanian Devil, biting and destruction wherever she went. I've had toddlers who were less exhausting. I spent every day, ALL DAY, chasing her out of things and getting her out of tight places she had gotten into. I have never had a dog that I was actually happy to see take a nap..and I would threaten anyone who tried to wake her up with an a** kicking:). I never knew a dog could be so hyper!
She is a much better dog today, but I still chuckle when people express surprise that I have a Beagle as an inside dog. We wouldn't trade her for anything..hard head and all.

Ms. Pooch, I would rather see a dog get a little tabasco sauce on the gums than be a biter!


Try a correction collar, with your dogs mix she's bound to be a stubborn thick headed littler bugger.

Every dog we ever had thought Tabasco and Bitter Apple were toppings we used because we really wanted them to enjoy their sneakers, chair legs, and assorted household items.

So funny your experience was EXACTLY like mine! I thought the dog was crazy or something. She really gave me a run for the money.

I used to unplug the phone when she napped just so NOTHING could wake her. I was always very happy to put her in her crate for nap time. Once we moved to our house I made hubby disconnect the doorbell for the same reason-LOL

I think what finally saved us was putting up a fence (covers almost 1/2 acre). Now that her energy is properly placed zooming around the yard she is perfect! It really takes a lot of time with beagles. I always tell people that when they ask about Maggie.

I am so thankfull I found this site. I have just gotten a darling little puggle girl. She is so very cute while she is sleeping or playing with her toys, but unfortunatly she bites and nips a whole lot. I am not sure what to do and need help. Her name is Bailey and she is almost 8 weeks old. While being very smart, she seems to be missing the part that "ouch" means she is hurting me. She already knows how to sit and is starting to get "lay down". Bailey loves to bite my toes, hands, and even tries to go for my face. I have to fix this for both Bailey and my sake. Please please help.

Another thing, I have tried that bitter apple stuff and she seemed to go back for more, also tried to spray water at her but it didn't even bother her. I found placing a towel over her crate calms her down some, she does show beagle signs by the howling. Since placing the towel over she has calmed that down some, but once again my main concern is the biting. When I say ouch I use a high pitch voice and pull my hand or what ever she bites away as though she hurt me bad, but Bailey only comes back for more.
