i have a doberman who is 3 yrs old and having puppies for 1st time. i have no idea what to do can someone please help us. need info on what to do when she goes in labor. she is due to have any day now. i think im more nervous than her. any info will be great.

I'm so tired of reading these posts.. these ignorant people breeding their dogs, and then asking at delivery time to ask WHAT DO I DO.

I'll tell you what to do, GET A CLUE. Seriously.

Go to the library, get a book on whelping. Ignore the ignorance.

Halo, you don't know the circumstances, so don't set yourself up as judge. No one hired you to tell us all how BAD we are.You really don't help anyone by your nastiness, and the people who need help the most are being run off this site by it.

First call your vet, let them know she is due any day. Call again when she goes into active labor, so they have a heads up.I happen to breed Dobermans. She may have many different signs of labor. Nesting, shivering, she may stop eating. Prepare a quiet, warm, comfortable place for her and stay with her. Most importantly stay calm. You set the tone. Contact your vet as soon as you see a sign of labor, just in case you need emergency services. She should do most of the work. Make sure the puppies noses and mouths are cleaned out. try to get them nursing. I hope you have been supplementing moms diet with puppy food at the least for for the last half of her pregnancy, this helps with puppy growth. Make sure thay are clean and warm.

I agree Roberta. It drives me crazy when people go on to a post like this and just make a judgement post. Whats done is done. The dog is already pregnant. Halos Fire, If you hate questions like this stop responding to them. Or respond with an answer and add to the end a note that NICELY recommends them to have their dog spayed after the litter. You will get more done being nice that being a ............. ( intterupting self and climbing down off of soap box)

As for the answer to the original question.... my recommendation is to go online and do a search for your breed of dog and the word labor.... (Chihuahua labor). you will come up with a plethora of sites that will help you with labor specific to your dog breed. Do this search now BEFORE she goes into labor. Many sites will also tell you warning signs to look for for complication and it is important that you know what you are looking for when she does go into labor. It might mean you have to helpher.... and you will know in advance what you will need to have onhand do so. It might mean bringing her to the vet if any of those symptoms occur, but it could mean the life of your dog. (please excuse the misspellings...I have a massive headache and dont feel like looking to see if I mistyped)

The people who defend something like this are just as ignorant as the poster. I'm sure the majority of the intelligent people on this board will agree with me.

If you don't know how to whelp and raise a litter, you definitely shouldn't be having pups.. and you definitely shouldn't be on here the very last minute looking for advice. It's a disaster waiting to happen, and you know It's true.. as do I.

Ask the people on this board that do rescue/adoption/work at animal shelters and see animals put to their untimely deaths because of people like this.. how they feel about this subject.. :) I'm pretty sure you won't get any warm hearted answers or sympathy from them because of this persons stupidity.

Again, I said ask the vet, because, well, they'd be able to help you most with being able to actually physically help you, and they give you advice that is straight on. I will also say this again. Halo is unneccesarily rude to majority of people on here. She has a lot of pent up anger, as do I, but I do not blatantly act out. I apologize for halo and for myself, I'm helping a few people through pm's on this issue, its like a puppy whelping fest lately. :...So, vet is best bet, I think. In case anything screwy goes on. Unless you think you can handle it all on your own from what others have told you already.

Man oh man people are so uncareing, can't believe people on here are so hateful! please have your Dobi checked out by your vet otherwise relax and let it take its course be with her let her know you are right by her side and watch for signs give her a nice clean space and don't try to help her unless she is in need.Hold on and you will be the proud momma as I am my Chihuahua Sadie Bell is haveing her babies we have three, two boys one girl she is a very proud momma.

Halo, I, likewise am not ignorant. I am niether defending or bashing the post. She asked for help. I am sure that at one time, you were unaware of breeding dos and don'ts. If I were a betting person, I almost bet you have probably been in this person's shoes, so stop judging and start teaching what you know to be correct. When you bash a person for a mistake, you have already shut the door on trying to teach them anything. You probably have a tremendous wealth of knowledge that could be very benificial to those of us that are .... what did you call it .... ignorant, but you lost this student by your rude reply. Why don't you take some advice from those of us who know, NO ONE wants to be insulted when they are honestly looking for answers.

Sorry people-Why be coddling to someone who does this?

Do you know how many genetic disease Doberman have? That are all the result of bad breeding? Any clue?!

People like this are literally KILLING the breed so no one should sit back and tell them its ok. It is not ok!

Take your dog to a vet and let them deal with it if you have no clue, then get it fixed-as well as a all the puppies.

there is no excuse for breeding unhealth tested dobes. The dog should have been fixed if it was an accident or she got the dog already pregnant. I'm sure all the pups will end up in rescue anyway cuz this person won't screen homes.

All this is doing is bringing more cardio,wobblers,on Willebrand's,riddled dobes into the world.

Shame on you-and anyone supporting you.

Breeding a Doberman means you need to know their history and status for all of the diseases-because sadly it is rare to have dogs completely unaffected by any of this.

If you can't handle being told this you shouldn't have bred-you should have learned all this before hand and I'm almost 100% sure you wouldn't have bred your dog then.

This forum is here to educate and in this case you need to know what you are doing is absolutely wrong! A question like this means you didn't research it at all so god knows you didn't health test. Its pathetic.

Were are you located? the best advice other than the vet is find a local breeder to help you. They'll be less than thrilled but are in it for the betterment of the breed so they may help you and you may learn something in the process.

Joce, I completely agree. Dobermans, mastiffs, minpins, sooo many breeds are going downhill so fast. It almost seems impossible to reserve at times...Its so overwhelming to me. The Chin has a few problems too, but not to the extent of health problems like those, not yet, not as bad.

Theres been more than a couple people on here come back and ask why the people who bought pups are trying to sue them because they are bleeding! These people really have no clue. I hope they got sued and lost every greedy penny they got from the litters. How can you breed dobes,know they have a bleeding disorder(I guess some don't even care enough to check) and still not health test?!

Stuff like this infuriates me to no end. So many people on the dobe forums get dogs that die so young because they have cardio or they cost thousands of dollars just to get fixed because they have a bleeding disorder that needs to be worried about their entire life's.

the breed suffers-I don't care if some byb is upset because she was told what she needed to hear. She is bringing in another litter of pups to continue the decline of the breed.

In an attempt to be TPPC (Terrific Pets Politically Correct) here is what you do.
1. Contact a vet and set up an appointment, spend some money on a professional.
2. Contact the breeder where your bitch came from if that is possible.
3. Stop being irresponsible with the life of a living creature.
I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <

I dont think I agree that the min pins are one of the breeds going down hill, though having pugs, I would not argue with that one being included :P

To the OP.....do you own both parents or did you use an outside stud? Possibly the stud owner can be there to help you out? How far along is she? Has she been seen by a vet yet? Have you done any research at all about whelping and raising pups yet?
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

Very good post joce.

As a foster, and strong advocate of rescues, I cannot support the irresponsible acts of those who are so careless.

As one poster stated, seek the advice of your vet. Make sure you spay the bitch, as well as, neuter/spay ALL of the puppies, BEFORE you rehome them. That's the least you can do.

Willebrand's- this alone is a good reason to be worried about the whelping. If the bitch has not been tested for this and you all are telling her to just relax, she could be loosing her bitch. This is nothing to mess with. The dog could bleed to death during the whelping process. So don't relax and let nature take it coarse. Seek the help of a professonal. Are there any experianced breeders for you breed in the area that can also help you?

Again, Joce, You also do not know the circumstances and have no right to criticize anyone. The questioner is doing the RIGHT thing by asking for help. EVEN if it is late. I will repeat my self. YOU CAN REACH A PERSON MUCH EASIER WITH KINDNESS THAN WITH NASTY.I have not one time said I condone the breeding of this dog, I only said that you want to make a point, make one that will count. Be kind about it. Spaying all dogs will kill the breed off just as fast as breeding unhealthy dogs. Maybe what you are saying is that you are a self proclaimed expert breeder, and no one else is that inteligent or can learn as well as you?

Do you know anything about dobermans? Anything at all? doesn't sound like it.

Some estimates say something like 60% of dobes are affected by cardio- So yes,more than half of the breed is affected by just this one genetic condition so it is not a breed for people to breed because they think its their right,or want money,or their family wants puppies etc,etc.

I'm guessing your a breeder since I see now earlier in the thread people told you you were"bad". You also may not be very computer savy.

Heres what happens. Someone has a dog-they come online and google breeding doberman. What comes up but this thread! So they could read oh you should do this and this and it will all end great and we are all so nice here and very happy you bred.

Or they could read the truth-that dobes are a breed severely affected by many genetic conditions and it is not at all a breed for someone to just throw together and hope the best without health tests and really knowing the dogs line. But its mean to write that so I guess we should not try to educate people.

get over yourself. those of us who do know about the dogs are here to educate and help not only the original poster but anyone who comes along and reads the thread. And we are not the "mean" ones breeding the badly bred dogs and ruining entire breeds.

and I thought(and still do) that my entire first post was well written and informative. I'd never tell someone to look online on how to whelp a dog that may bleed out-thats stupid. do you know about dobe bleeding disorders-because this is probally a byb dog having more byb pups and they are very likely to suffer from it. And if the dogs had been health tested I'm pretty sure she'd know about whelping-and if it was an accident etc as I already said she also should have learned and probably should have fixed the dog a while ago. the circumstances of the dogs pregnancy are irrelevant.
