the post about is your dog altered? I would like to take that a step further. If you aren't breeding your dog then why isn't your dog altered if you only have one or two dogs.
It is better for their health.
I just thought it was interesting on how many people didn't still have their dog altered!!
So why not?
I know this will open a can of worms.
I am here to learn more and help when I can.

My boxer babies are not fixed due to the age but when they are able to go under, they will!! :)

You're absolutely right Boxercorps, if you are not a breeder, there is no reason at all, other than a couple of medical reasons why you should not spay or neuter your dog. Not only does it lengthen their life span, it would cut down on the considerable amount of unwanted dogs sitting in shelters right now.

I haven't done it yet. I got Manson when he was 2 and he hadn't been neutered and fortunately didn't have the problems that neutering can help to avoid. I don't own another dog and he is only outside with my direct supervision, meaning I am outside with him.

I keep saying I'm going to have it done, but with it not being an emergency and not having any issues with him that would make me want to run out and do it right away, it just gets pushed to the backburner. I guess I could compare it to how I know that I should see a doctor at least once a year for a checkup, but I don't tend to go unless I am sick or hurt.

In the past I have always had animals from puppyhood/kittenhood and just got them fixed as a routine thing when they were 6 mths old.

My dog is not neutered and will not be neutered unless it is medically necessary. The reason for MY choice is due to countless hours of research.

Mine are all altered. However, I will say that working in the animal field has shown me that most unaltered males have far less health problems than an unaltered female does. It seemed like every unaltered female dog ended up with pyometra (pus filled uterus) at some point. That can easily kill your dog if it isn't caught in time. Rarely did we see the cancer that can be associated with unaltered males.

Honestly if I had it to do all over again I would not have removed Spencer descended testicle (he was monorchid one testicle did not come down). The reason is because it altered his hair so badly I have a hard time keeping it matt free.

I researched the pros and cons. The link that mastiffluv posted mentions the elevated risk of bone cancer in altered Rotts. I decided to spay my female and leave my male intact. They are house dogs with a fenced yard only ever leaving on leash, so no chance of breeding. My female does have a recessed vulva and recurring infections but cannot prove that was due to the spay or not.
Because they live together had to get one of them done, It's 24 hour chaos keeping 2 apart in the same house,been there not doing that again.
Although I'm not convinced spaying or neutering is 100% healthier for the dog, I do agree most dog owners especially first time or "casual" owners should get their dogs done. But you can still be a responsible owner with an unaltered animal. The key word being responsible.

The only one that is not neutered is my girl dog for 2 reasons
#1 - she's too young - just turned 5 months
#2 - she has an inverted vulva and on the advice of our vet we are waiting until after she has her first heat. She said that going through the first heat fixes the problem in about 80% of dogs so they want to try that before they have to surgically correct the problem

FYI - she does have an appointment to be spayed and has had it for about a month now - so yeah, it's going to happen at some point - but right now it's up to mother nature as to when.

Great post... In a nutshell... Most of you know that I have not bred yet, but am planning to show/possibly breed my two intact dogs. All others are neutered.
The more people I meet, the more I love my Siberians...

As previously posted, Molly isn't spayed yet because she's too young - 4 months in 3 days.
Mastiffluv: Very interesting read! It definately makes me question the necessity of having my pup spayed at exactly 6 months like the vets are pushing.
I know the dangers of not having her spayed (including unwanted puppies, so please don't everyone jump on my head for writing this!), but have NEVER heard of the dangers of having her spayed!
Thank you for playing devil's advocate, and educating everyone about what "they" don't tell you!

I have one intact male Golden Retriever, 3 years old, we "adopted" him from a family member and he has an appt to be altered on the 23rd. Before my family member got him he was abandoned (actually tied to a semitrailer sitting in someones yard) with a note and all his paperwork. The note said he was not of breeding quality (he isn't, he has white markings on him). We have found out he is scared of every noise, guns, I think he was abused or something.

If it weren't for us planning to get a 15 month old weimaraner in 2 weeks I don't think I would get him neutered. He doesn't spray, and is a big baby, I guess I wouldn't see the need to do it. But with the weim being 15 months (also unaltered, because he was a show dog, and turned out to be not so great show quality) I see the need and they are both going to get neutered.

I agree, Rarely will you hear someone say "before you spay/neuter read up on it first". Which is why I felt it necessary to post the link. Sure there are benefits, but like anything else, when you have benefits you have risks as well. If I had went through with neutering Mac like everyone suggested, and not took it upon myself to educate myself on the cons of spaying and neutering, I would regret it big time. Before I do anything with Mac I research it for a very long time. That is exactly why he is not on frontline or heartworm meds, and no vaccines (execpt rabies b/c it's the law) but that's another topic.
And again, this is not directed for irresponsible pet owners. This is aimed directly at the responsible pet owners only. It would just be nice if people would research things a little more. Vets have good intentions, but some things you need to make your own decisions about.

well I think the reason why people don't get their dogs spayed or neutered is because they either are lazy, don't care, or they are wanting to be amature BYBs.

I absolutely care, or I would not have done hours of research.
And I also oppose BYB, which is why my dog is NEVER outside without a leash and me on the other end.
