I have a question about treats that fellow dog lovers give there dogs. I have a 16 weeks old shipoo puppy and I admit i was feeding him commercial dog treats that you buy at your local walmart or grocery store. Bear loved them but on my visit to the vet today for his shots the vet asked me about Bear's nutritional needs and I said he loves the science diet I had bought on my last visit and she said oh that was great. But then she asked what did I do for treats and I could tell by the look on her face my answer was not right .She explained store bought treats contained far to much salt and fillers non of which Bear needed. My question is they only had one kind of treat avaiable at the vet which i did purchase and i'm sure all you guys feed your dogs healthy treats can you offer me some suggestions I can buy online or in certain per stores?

Hi Cheryl. I guess everyone has their own preverence,but, first off I would not feed Science Diet. We have a new yorkie baby and I started her off on Welliness puppy. Inovia is also good. For treats I like the Ole'Mother Hubbard's puppy bones. They are tiny and have natural ingredants.

can i ask the why on the science diet, not that i'm adverse to changing i just like to be in the know if i can be.and i will check out the others you mentioned thaanks so much

onlyashipoowilldo...about the science diet question. If you go back to the list of topics or threads in this discussion room forum you will see near the top actually 5th one down (with a star beside it) a topic called "Wiley's great list of grading foods". It gives a break down of most of the dog food brands that you can buy. The grading process is explained in there as well :)
As for treats..I use Wellness bites, or the dried chicken strips. There has been some concern about the dried chicken strips manufactured in China so keep an eye out for those and try to buy some that are manufactured in N. America.

As far as treats, My dog love the pupcorn, and I also use the chicken jerky strips. I worried about them being from China, but there is now a statement on the top of the bag stating they are cooked at 185 degrees F. So I figured there isn't much that is going to survive that kind of heat, so I don't worry about it much. The Pupcorn are low in fat, and are excellent treats, there is another maker called Crunch'n Bones. They are both the same as far as I know. I know alot of people have mixed emotions about rawhide, but I do give it to mine and there is a great site that only uses usa stuff. If you are interested send me a private note, and I will give you the addy. They also have some cheap good toys. Hope that helps.

i get regular dog treats i ussualy try new ones but his favorite ones is these little puppy ones there really little but he loves them. i also try new recipies because that way i kno what hes eating. also sometimes if hes lucky and i have time to make my self breakfast i give him some scrambled eggs that he loves. he also likes to play with skittles.. he doesnt eat them he just throws them around and its cute. but cooking dog treats is fun!!

i did read all the recipes for making my own treats and I'm going to give that a try on the weekend that way i do know what my puppy is getting. thanks for all the help everyone

i use hot dogs, I cut them real little and put them in the microwave untill they hard. The dogs LOVE them.

I don't buy treats as a general rule, I feed them apple chunks, or little pieces of cheese. Sometimes I give them carrot sticks, or pieces of leftover chicken, or beef.

Mine love the bully sticks. I also buy the natural balance lamb roll and cut it into small chunks. Its actually dog food, but they love it and it makes excellent treats. For regular food, i prefer the Innova Evo.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.

To the poster that recommended hot dogs: Hot dogs are NOT good for dogs, they contain far too much salt. Too much salt can lead to salt toxicity as well as pancreas cancer among other problems.

My dogs LOVE cheerios for treats, and my vet 100 percent agreed with me that they are safe and nutritious for your pup. My dogs will do anything for a cheerio.

Our dogs love the occasional Bully stick, also raw marrow bones, carrots, green beans, apples, raw venison necks, I also make a lot of my own dog cookies, but when it's hot out, I buy old mother hubbard dog treats {I buy the puppy size even though my dogs are medium to large}

My girls get old mother hubbard treats and carrots. I think carrots are their favorite. Pebbles goes crazy whenever she hears us cutting anything in the kitchen.

well by the sounds of things the best things for our pets are the things that are good for us which only makes sense. the junk food we consider treats isn't good for us 99% of the time why should it be different for our pups. I tried Bear with carrots this morning he loved them. I think i will go the natural way and make some treats when I have the time and you all mentioned one treat you like to give so i will look into those. thanks everyone for your time and great advice.

With everyone else, I feed apples, carrot, asparagus, sweet potatoes, mango slices, jicama, orange slice, pears, tomatoes, he is not fond of berries.

Mind you he only gets slices of the above when I am fixing them. I do try to give him a carrot a day cause they are soo good for him.

Your basically correct, whatever within limits that we eat we see if he will try. If its good for me, its good for him. I say keep tinking the way you are thinking and you will have a happy healthy dog

I also give mine the bully sticks. They have grown to like the little baby carrots. I had rather give them something like that too, rather than all the other stuff thats out there. I think I am going to try them on some apple too. They will usually eat just about anything because they are so afraid of the other one getting it. lol!!!

I go to the local pet bakery and buy treats from there. They are cheaper then most treats and I know how bakes them and where. They also get marrow bones.
If we ban Pit Bulls and Rottweilers are humans some dont like next ?

Here are some good treats:
>mother nature dog treats
>any brand of innova treats
>any merrick treats
>greenies



Just look for anything without by products etc.
Look for treats that are all natural and never feed to many, you don't want your dog turning into an ooompa loompa or a balloon :)

Maybe try looking for a healthier food:
>innova
(really good, thats what my puppy eats and she does wonderful on it, it's really heatlhy)

>merrick
>canidae
>chicken noodle soup(brand of dog food, not actual soup)
>royal canine
>blue buffalo
>natural choice
>welliness

Their are more foods, just makes sure their are no by products and no corn, or too much rice. Their are alot of other ingredients you gotta watch out for :)

I buy all of my dog treats from an organic dog chef bakery. It contains only natural ingredients and completely avoids all sugars, wheat, salt, corn, meat, soy and GMO ingredients. I buy them cupcakes, peanut butter cookies, biscuits that are shaped like hearts/dogs/stars..etc, biscotti's..and that kinda thing. They LOVE them and I know they're getting something totally healthy. You can find these kind of bakery's in your phone book but most are located on farms, they're pretty easy to find. Also can be found if you do a search online with your home town included.

I guess you could also buy treats at your local health food store, but the ingredients aren't always that great. Some have hidden genetically modified ingredients, refined sugar, corn and salt so watch out for that.

By the way, it is great that you care about what your dog eats and I always love to see people who ask questions about these kind of things. There are so many people who don't give a damn about their pets' health. It is so important.
