It all started when I was wandering around a shelter with a friend. I saw the sweetest little cat and I had to have her. So I bring her home.A few weeks pass, all 3 cats learned to coexist, she even made friends with my younger cat. But now my eldest cat is starting to chase the new cat up the stairs every chance she gets. New cat is really sensitive so it scares her so badly when elder cat goes after her. It started out just being a once in awhile thing, then a few times a week thing, then a once a day thing, and it's now becoming a several times a day thing.

I'm really worried, I do NOT want to get rid of my new cat, I'm already attached to her, but elder cat seems so unhappy. I feel just awful. If anyone knows how to get kitties to call a truce and learn to be friends or at least tolerate each other, I would be grateful.

leave them be. As long as they are not physically tearing each other apart, let them establish thier own rules. They will establish a heirarchy and coexist, but it will take a while.

If you just cant bear elder cat's misery, when the younger cat torments him pick him up by the scruff of the neck (gently!!!) and hiss in his face, letting him know that he needs to cool his heels because you are "top cat", not him. Thats how I got my groups to get along back when I had a herd at any given time. I'd imagine a shot from a water bottle would probably do the trick as well.

I would have to disagree with picking up a cat by the scruff of its neck. You can injure an adult cat by doing this.

You are right catlover, I see where it could harm an adult cat. I didn't think of that since the majority of my herds were mostly younger cats. But on adults it seems to me like their own body weight would cause strain. I do and have picked up my adult cats by their scruff, but I have never had to do it repeatedly, and usually there was no need to actually lift them off the ground, so they still supported their own weight. My vet would pick them up by the scruff as well, but only if that was the only way he could get ahold of them, since that naturally makes them hold still.

Anyway, please take this into account don't think that I mean for you to beat up on your kitties!!!! I've never hurt any of mine doing it, but please be carefull!
